Great Northern Art Show
29/06/11"GNAS is now entering its tenth year, and has become a significant feature of the arts scene in North Yorkshire. Throughout the greater part of its existence it concentrated its efforts on mounting a large exhibition of painting, by reputed professional artists, which took place in Ripon Cathedral. This year the Show will run from 2 to 24 September.
From its original exclusive focus on painting, in recent years we have expanded our remit to include both printmaking and photography. Also, we have expanded to take in several other venues in the city, as well as the main exhibition in the Cathedral. In 2010, for the first time, we were able to mount exhibitions devoted specifically to photography as a medium, and this venture was so successful that we have decided to expand that activity in the current year.
The principal venue for the display of photography will be Great Northern Wine, in Ripon. This is located very close to the city centre. The exhibition takes place on the premises of a well-established wine merchant, who has expended his activities by opening in his first floor space a spacious and versatile function room. This he now uses on a regular basis for a variety of arts activities. The place has become an important asset in the cultural life of the city and of North Yorkshire more widely. "
